Gospel music as we know it today is heavily rooted in the rich tradition of southern culture. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Charleston is privileged to have within its city limits some of the most influential gospel artists and composers of our time. This year the College of Charleston Gospel Choir presents a showcase of local artistry that celebrates music written by local recording artists. Under the direction of Brenten Weeks, the College of Charleston’s Gospel Choir highlights both traditional and contemporary music performing a range of pieces including psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs from a variety of genres.
